Gold plated jewelry also bonds real gold onto a base metal — but the gold layer is thinner, and the base metal underneath is often brass rather than sterling silver. (When the base is sterling silver, you will sometimes see it described as "gold plated sterling silver," which is a step up from brass-based plating.)

Because less gold is used, plated pieces are more accessible in price. And to be clear: good gold plating is a legitimate craft. A well-made plated piece, with even coverage and careful finishing, looks beautiful and — with simple care — keeps its glow for years.
